Coal loading by Indian Railways rose 22.5% in October 2026 through the 18th, compared with the same period a year earlier, setting an all-time high. Daily loading was higher by 87 rakes than in October 2025, supporting fuel deliveries to thermal power stations.
In H1 of FY 2026-27, average coal dispatches to thermal plants reached 430 rakes a day, an increase of 7.1% over the comparable period. September 2026 also recorded growth, with daily dispatches up 14% against September 2025.
The increase comes as energy use and industrial output rise. Below-normal rainfall in some areas has also contributed to demand for electricity generated from coal.
Regular coal movement has helped thermal stations maintain fuel stocks for power generation. Railways is coordinating with the Coal Ministry on evacuation from producing areas and with the Power Ministry on continued transport and supply, with the aim of keeping adequate reserves at generating plants.
