The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is actively executing Special Campaign 6 for Swachhata, focused on enhancing cleanliness in government offices and resolving pending matters including public grievances and MP/PMO/State Govt references. In accordance with DARPG guidelines, the campaign is being enthusiastically implemented by field formations nationwide.

The campaign commenced with a Preparatory Phase (September 15-30, 2026) to identify key targets, followed by the Implementation Phase (October 2 – 31, 2026). Income Tax offices across the country have shown strong participation, with ongoing efforts aimed at boosting workplace efficiency, fostering sustainability, and ensuring timely resolution of grievances.

In the first two weeks of the Implementation Phase, the campaign has already delivered notable results:

Cleanliness drives carried out at more than 1200 sites across India.

Successful disposal of scrap, including e-waste contributed to revenue generation while promoting responsible waste management and environmentally sustainable practices.

Weeding out of more than 14,000 redundant files.

Freeing up of space of nearly 55,000 sq. ft.

More than 13,000 public grievances resolved during first 2 weeks of campaign.

These results underscore the Department's firm commitment to embedding cleanliness practices, enhancing record management, and advancing digitization and responsible e-waste disposal. The CBDT Nodal Officer is working in close coordination with regional counterparts to ensure effective implementation, with daily progress updates being uploaded to the SCDPM portal managed by DARPG.

To enhance public engagement, CBDT has made more than 150 posts on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting achievements, best practices, and citizen-centric efforts. The campaign is being widely promoted across digital platforms, reinforcing the Department's focus on transparency, participation and good governance.

During the campaign, the department has taken many initiatives and some of these are:

A. Citizen Centric Initiatives by Income Tax Department in West Bengal & Sikkim as well as Gujarat Regions

As part of Special Campaign 6, the Income Tax Department, West Bengal & Sikkim and Gujarat, carried out a cleanliness drive at St. John’s Church, a renowned tourist spot in Kolkata; Kamudini Homes Higher Secondary School, Kalimpong; Municipal Girls High School, Darjeeling; pilgrim place, Mehsana; Vastrapur Railway Station, Ahmedabad etc. in addition to Income Tax Offices at Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. The initiative reinforced the Department's commitment to cleanliness and sustainability.

The office of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, West Bengal & Sikkim organised a ‘Waste to Art’ exhibition from 01.10.2026 to 06.10.2026 at Oikotaan Rooftop, Aayakar Bhawan Annexe, Kolkata featuring innovative artworks made from discarded household materials. Used plastic bottles, cans, containers and other scrap materials were transformed into striking depictions of human figures, animal replicas, planters and decorative artefacts alongside a photography gallery. The initiative beautifully blended artistic creativity with environmental consciousness, promoting the message of waste-to-wealth and sustainable living.

C. Space Optimisation and Office Beautification at Delhi

The Office of the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), Delhi converted an under-utilised floor area into a ‘Laghu Pustakalaya’, a mini library with a reading lounge, book cabinets, suitable lighting, seating and indoor plants. The initiative promotes optimal space utilisation and provides a conducive environment for reading and staff well-being.

As part of Special Campaign 6, the Income Tax Offices at Kolkata, Chennai and Bhubaneswar undertook initiatives for the proper disposal of e-waste generated in office premises, promoting environmentally responsible waste management and ensuring the systematic handling of discarded electronic items.

D. Cleanliness Drive and Green Initiative at Aayakar Bhawan Dakshin, Kolkata

The Office of the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax-2, Kolkata restored an overgrown garden through clearance and beautification, incorporating fountain features, decorative lamp pillars and potted plants to create a well-maintained green space for officers, staff and visitors. The initiative promoted a greener workplace and reinforced the Departments’ commitment to cleanliness and sustainability.

The Income Tax Department also actively participated in the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' (SHS) campaign during the month of September 2026. Key initiatives included the Swachhata pledge, Sustainable Waste Management, medical camps for Safai Mitras, cleaning up of parks and other public spaces, engaging and sensitizing school students and youth for Swachhata through 'Swachhata Gyan Yatra' and also actively participating in the nationwide Shramdaan – 'Ek Din Ek Ghanta Ek Saath'.

The initiatives undertaken by CBDT under Special Campaign 6 reaffirm its commitment to Swachhata, efficiency, and citizen-centric governance. Through innovation, active participation, and sustainable practices, the Department continues to drive the vision of a clean, efficient, and technology-enabled administration, ensuring that the spirit of Swachhata remains a year-round pursuit across all field formations.
