Growing up in a middle-class Scheduled Caste family, Aarav Patel (name changed) aspired to build a career at the intersection of technology, business and innovation.

He envisioned establishing successful technology-driven enterprises and making a meaningful contribution to society through his work. However, limited financial resources, inadequate mentorship and a lack of professional networks in advanced science and engineering careers presented significant challenges.

The high cost of pursuing quality higher education at leading international universities posed a major financial barrier. In addition, limited access to experienced mentors and professional networks made it difficult to navigate advanced academic opportunities and understand potential career pathways in science and engineering. Despite these constraints, he remained committed to acquiring the knowledge, skills and global exposure necessary to pursue his ambitions.

The National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) Scheme provided crucial financial assistance, enabling him to pursue a Master of Science (MSc) degree at Brown University in the United States. During the financial year 2023–24, assistance amounting to US$ 89,816 was provided, with support approved on 26 June 2023. The assistance covered tuition fees, maintenance allowance, visa fees, medical insurance and travel expenses.

By addressing the substantial financial requirements associated with overseas education, the scheme helped the beneficiary access an advanced academic environment and acquire specialised knowledge, skills and credentials relevant to his professional aspirations. His international educational experience strengthened his understanding of technology, innovation and business development.

Today, the beneficiary is a business owner and director, working towards his ambition of building successful technology-driven enterprises. The qualification and exposure gained through his studies have provided him with a stronger foundation to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities. His family continues to belong to the middle-income segment, while the educational opportunity has expanded his professional horizons and equipped him with capabilities to pursue future growth.

The National Overseas Scholarship Scheme reflects the Government of India's commitment to expanding access to higher education for eligible students from Scheduled Castes and other specified categories, in accordance with the scheme's guidelines. By supporting tuition and other essential expenses associated with overseas study, the scheme helps eligible students access international academic institutions, strengthen their professional capabilities and pursue their aspirations.

The beneficiary's journey demonstrates how targeted educational assistance can help bridge financial barriers, widen access to global learning opportunities and nurture the aspirations of future professionals and entrepreneurs. From overcoming financial constraints to pursuing global education and entrepreneurship, his story highlights the transformative potential of educational opportunity in building a foundation for innovation, ambition and social progress.
