The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that three students, aged 7 to 8 years, were injured when a portion of the ceiling plaster of their classroom collapsed on them in a dilapidated government primary school building in Udaipur district, Rajasthan. Reportedly, the victims sustained head injuries and teachers were not present in the school when the incident occurred. The injured students walked home on their own and their family members subsequently took them to the hospital for treatment.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued a notice to the Udaipur District Magistrate, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. It is expected to include the health status of the injured students.

According to the media report carried on 7th October 2026, the school was ordered to close after the incident and alternate arrangements are being made by the authorities for conducting classes. Reportedly, the school building was last repaired in 2020.
